Trump lost Congress. He did not lose power. Why this defeat is the spring to finish what he started in Iran and against narco-politicians, why not Vance, the DeSantis factor and what comes next for Mexico and Morena.
On Tuesday Trump lost. On Wednesday the race for what comes after him began.
Read correctly, the defeat is the spring his movement was missing.
Tuesday night, at four minutes past ten, Texas fell. Not a district. Not a border county. Texas. James Talarico beat Ken Paxton for the Senate by twelve points, Gina Hinojosa pushed Greg Abbott out of the governor's mansion, and Democrats took the attorney general's office and the lieutenant governorship in a state where they had not won anything statewide since 1994.
Hours later, Donald Trump wrote that he was not on the ballot and that, if he had been, they would have won in a landslide. Then he blamed Fox News. Then he posted a cap with a single word: VETO.
That cap is the summary of what comes next. And almost nobody is reading it right.
The easy reading says Trump is finished. His critics' reading says Congress has finally put a brake on him. I read something else. The brake exists, and it is real, but it does not stop Trump. It stops his movement, if his movement settles for a half-finished legacy.
This defeat is the spring Trumpism was missing to finish what it started.
The war in Iran, the hunt for narco-politicians in Mexico and the succession no longer depend on Congress. They depend on the audacity of the next twenty-six months, and on who embodies it.
That is why the title of this piece is not about Trump. It is about Marco Rubio.
